Clerk’s Update

At a full council meeting of LRPC on 13th January 2025, the council voted unanimously to increase our 2025/26 budget to a precept of £93,811. This is an annual increase of £1.83 for a Band D property, this would be a reported increase of 3.69%. These decisions are never taken lightly and LRPC scrutinised our expenditure and resolved that this was the necessary amount to maintain our service delivery. We do not wish to place excessive f inancial burdens on our residents, hence this minor increase. We still have a vacancy for a new co-opted councillor, please see advert (second image). We still have a few vacant plots at Gravelye Lane allotments. We are temporarily allowing non-residents to apply, so please contact us via the details below to apply for a plot. The costs are higher for non-residents, but not excessive. Summer is approaching, so get your wellies out and work on your new plot. All the very best from Sarah, Santi and Lissi the Rough Collie.

HIGH STREET JUNCTION ACCIDENT AND NEAR-MISS REPORTS

Following West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) decision not to support HGV restriction at the narrow ‘bakery corner’ junction of the Lewes Road with the High Street, Lindfield Parish Council (LPC) is compiling reports of incidents at this location with a view to asking WSCC to reconsider its stance. Please note any serious accidents should be reported directly to Sussex Police.
Concerns regarding the safety of the highway should be reported directly to West Sussex County Council.

LPC knows that WSCC’s current approach to Traffic Regulation Order requests under the Community Highways Scheme includes information reported in road collision and casualty data provided by police reports, but considers that this data source potentially understates the issues at this location, where ‘near misses’ on the narrow, unprotected pavement are a daily feature of village life. This data will solely be used to build an evidence base of incidents at the junction of Lewes Road and Lindfield High Street.

PLANNING, TRANSPORT & TRAFFIC COMMITTEE

2023-24 Membership: Beecroft, Blunden, Burns, Grace, Matthews (Vice Chair), Nisbett, Upton (Chair), Webster, Wilson, Woolley

The Committee has continued to review applications in the village fulfilling its role as a consultee. In the 2023/24 financial year, the Council has reviewed 147 applications of which 44 were related to trees. The Council objected to six planning applications. In addition, the Council agreed to object to the proposed development of up to 90 dwellings on the land off Scamps Hill, Scaynes Hill Road (located within the boundary of Lindfield Rural Parish Council).

The Council spent a considerable amount of time trying to progress the TRO application for Lewes Road. The proposal was designed to reduce the number of large vehicles using Lindfield village as a short-cut, rather than following WSCC’s Advisory Lorry Routes (i.e. Motorway and A Roads, until as close to the intended destination as possible, when B roads are used). It would also serve to reduce the number of vehicles turning at the narrow and difficult junction of the High Street and Lewes Road, which on a daily basis causes vehicles to drive on the narrow single pavement, potentially endangering pedestrians accordingly. Lindfield Parish Council was disappointed that West Sussex County Council declined to proceed with the proposal for a 7.5 tonne weight restriction on the Lewes Road between the High Street and Gravelye Lane.

Representatives have regularly attended SHLAT (Scaynes Hill Active Travel) meetings.
In September the Planning and Traffic Committee was renamed as Planning Traffic and Transport Committee.

The Council purchased a real-time passenger information board for the bus stop on the High Street. More boards are now being installed in the village by West Sussex County Council. These will help support sustainable travel.

Village Day

As you may know village day this year is on 1st June - again we looking forward to having our stall – we will have a free to enter competition for the children and would love you to come over to see what we do – you can tell us about what you like about Lindfield or things that you like to see done better. We represent you the residents so your opinions matter to us.
