Lindfield Dramatic Club presents Deckchairs and Village Fairs

Lindfield Dramatic Club

Lindfield Dramatic Club will present a triple bill entitled Deckchairs and Village Fairs as its spring production at the end of May. Pairing two comic duologues from Jean McConnell’s popular Deckchairs series with Alan Ayckbourn’s evergreen short farce Gosforth’s Fete this promises to be a thoroughly entertaining evening with lots of laughs. The opener is Day Trippers in which a seaside outing takes an unexpected turn. This is followed by Cruise Missile where opposites collide on a holiday afloat. Rounding off the event is the hilarious Gosforth’s Fete which throws five disparate characters together in a damp tea tent as they try their best to run a successful village fair despite the surrounding chaos and confusion. Deckchairs and Village Fairs will be performed on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st May at King Edward Hall, starting at 8pm, with the bar open from 7.30pm. Tickets are available priced £12 from Caragon at 69 High Street, Lindfield, or online from www.tickettailor.com/events/lindfielddramaticclub

Lindfield Bonfire Night: Saturday 4th November 2023

This year Lindfield Bonfire Society (LBS) holds its traditional village bonfire celebration on Saturday 4th November on Lindfield Common. This is unusual in Lindfield, as we traditionally are always on 5th November – but this year, that falls on a Sunday.

The earliest records of 5th November celebrations in Lindfield date back to 1881. There were the customary street fires, dragging of tar barrels and much riotous behaviour. Did you know, for instance, that there used to be three bonfires in Lindfield: one on the Common, one outside the Bent Arms and a third in front of the Red Lion?

Although not raucous like its early days, the night will be crowded, noisy, involve naked flames and be potentially smoky at times. As an open air event LBS cannot guarantee what the weather will be like on the night, so they suggest wearing sensible, non-flammable clothing and foot ware that is appropriate for the conditions.

The event is free for the public to attend and starts with a torch light procession around Lindfield (see map pic) at 7.30pm. The procession heads onto the Common for the reading of the Bonfire Prayer and the lighting of the bonfire (8.15pm). The evening finishes with our grand firework display at around 8.30pm.

TIP: You can get a better look at the guy, by heading to the High Street during the day on 4th November – where he will be proudly on display by members of LBS. Please note that roads will be closed around Lindfield between 6.30-9.30pm. Avoid trying to drive into Lindfield on the evening, with road closures in effect plus a huge amount of increased traffic as visitors descend on the village, getting close to the High Street or Common is virtually impossible.

Although no charge is made to spectators on the night, Lindfield Bonfire Society would love to have contributions from those who enjoy the spectacle (which costs around £13k to out on). The easiest way to do this is via its website www.lindfieldbonfiresociety.co.uk/shop - where you can download the official programme or become a Friend of LBS for just £7.50 per year.

There will be a street collection on 4th November – but this DOES NOT contribute to the cost of the night. Volunteers with official buckets will be collecting for local children’s charities: Chestnut Tree House, Court Meadow Riding for the Disabled, Cleft Lip & Palate Association (C.L.A.P.A.), Orchard House and Woodlands Meed.

The organisers request that no one brings fireworks (inc sparklers) onto the Common, keep out of the fire site, don’t pick up dropped torches, and don’t bring pets to the event. The use of drones is banned on the night. And only members of Lindfield Bonfire Society are allowed to join in with the procession – please only watch at the side of the route.

For up-to-date information on the event, please see the LBS Facebook page.

Lindfield Village Run 2023 a success

On Sunday 21st May, more than 500 runners and their supporters turned up at Hickmans Lane Playing Field for the Lindfield Village Run.

The 5k (aka ‘family fun run’) and 10k races were both well-supported on what was near-perfect weather conditions for running. The event, which is a fundraiser for registered charity King Edward Hall, was supported by two Lindfield businesses: Potential Personal Training and Six Physio. The annual community event is well-supported by individuals too, as it took over 30 volunteers all giving their time, to bring the run together on the day, whether marshalling out on the course, setting up or registering participants on arrival.

Podium finishers for the 5k race were Paul Nixon (20:50) in third place, Nate Donougher (20:40) as runner up, and Dan Celani taking the top spot with a time of 18.49.

For the 10k race, Ian Kenton (44:17) took third place, Michael Priest (43:28) was second and the winner was Ben Gibson with a time of 42:40.

For the full results listing, see www.kingedwardhall.org.uk, and if you’d like to offer your time to help at next year’s event, please email the team via run@kingedwardhall.org.uk.

Lindfield Horticultural Society's Autumn Show a success this September 2022

Her Majesty the Queen was remembered and celebrated at this year’s Lindfield Horticultural Society Autumn Show. After making the decision to continue with the show, following the announcement of the death of the Queen, organisers gave exhibitors and visitors the chance to reflect on Her Majesty’s reign with a photograph, painting, floral tribute and a minute’s silence before the trophies were presented. Artist Julie Craig, who has Parkinsons and took up painting at an Art Therapy class, created her picture of the Queen the day before the show. “I thought it would be nice do a painting of the Queen, using mixed media - acrylics, water colours, and pastels, to display at the LHS Autumn show,” said Julie. “When I brought it along, it was a funny coincidence to find that someone had produced a large photo of exactly the same image I had based my painting on!” Julie was also delighted to win best in show for photography, while her logo design was chosen, following a public vote, as the new branding for the Horticultural Society. The annual show attracted large numbers of entries, with judges impressed with how the Lindfield gardeners had coped with this summer’s extreme weather conditions. First time exhibitors included Brian Dean who won the most humorous vegetable class with his Tromboncino squash! Caroline Cogle was thrilled to pick up three awards for her dahlias, while Jeff Essen triumphed in the floral art and handicrafts classes.

The photography classes attracted a wide range of entries, with judge Alex Rickards keen to encourage more young residents to take part and show off their photography skills next year, while two Lindfield cooks created a dilemma for judges who couldn’t decide on their favourite pumpkin soup, awarding a joint first prize!

No large Remembrance gatherings

By Valerie Upton, Chairman

It is with great regret that the committee of The Lindfield Branch of the Royal British Legion has decided not to organise any large events to commemorate Remembrance Sunday 2020.
In the current climate created by the Covid-19 pandemic, we do not feel it appropriate to arrange any event which will lead to the formation of a significant crowd of participants and spectators, knowing the aggressive transmission capabilities of the virus. Whilst all plans cannot yet be finalised, to be specific at this time, there will be: no line-up for the wreath-laying ceremony, no parade down Lindfield High Street, no refreshments in the King Edward Hall and no road closures.
Other questions remain to be addressed, but please be assured that the village of Lindfield WILL still remember.

Lindfield's marathon runners

lindfield-running-club.jpg

Take a stroll around Lindfield at any time of the day or evening and you’ll almost certainly be passed by at least one runner!

Over the last few years, running has become increasingly popular, with our own Lindfield Village Run now a permanent fixture on the village calendar.

There are plenty of good reasons for taking up running and the benefits are huge - from getting fitter and enjoying the fresh air, to clearing the mind and setting and reaching goals. And, apart from the cost of a decent pair of running shoes, it’s completely free!

While many people run for fun, some are taking their sport a step further as they train for challenging half and full marathons.

Read all about this first of two part feature where Claire Cooper meets three of them; Paul Spensley, Sarah and Adrian Alcock in this month’s (March) Lindfield Life magazine.

Village Day gets into Olympic Spirit

The traditional Village Day procession down the High Street – which marks the start of everyone’s favourite summer fete - is set to take on an international flavour this year. The ‘bar is set high’ and you’ll want to ‘jump in’ and ‘go for gold’ if you want to meet the standard of the fantastic fancy dress outfits in previous years.

You may have guessed that, with the Tokyo Olympics taking place in the summer, the world’s greatest sporting competition will be this year’s theme and the organisers are particularly keen to welcome more floats to celebrate and simply join in the fun of Village Day. All local schools, groups and organisations, from the Brownies to the Bonfire Society, are invited to take part in the parade, whether as a walking group or float.

The event starts at Hickmans Lane playing
fields and, with musical accompaniment, wends its way down the High Street, which is closed to traffic, before arriving on the Common where prizes are given for the best floats and walking groups.

Previously, floats have included everything from
rock bands playing on the back of a flatbed truck to the Harveys Brewery horses pulling a carriage – and let’s not forget the Wine Society’s vintage car!

Interested? Then make sure Saturday 30th May

is inked in in your diary. If you are a local company or society or school and want to get involved – perhaps by decorating your vehicle or creating an Olympic-themed trailer - then contact procession@kingedwardhall.org.uk.

It’s a great way to start Village Day, which, along with the Village Run, raises upwards of £10,000 each year to maintain the King Edward Hall for everyone to use. See www.kingedwardhall.org.uk for more information about both events.
