All Saints and Ensemble Reza present a music treat

By Hannah Carter

Join Ensemble Reza in Lindfield for a magical family concert and ‘wish’ away those January blues on Saturday 13th January at 3pm at All Saints Church. This concert is perfect for all ages and will feature the brilliant musical story the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, composed by Paul Dukas, (which was used in the film Fantasia), arranged and narrated for our group by Ensemble Reza musician, Anna Cooper. Accompanied by our Ensemble Reza quartet, plus a few extra instruments (double bass, bouzouki, accordion) this magical musical story will include plenty of audience participation and will have you on the edge of your seat!

We are passionate about giving young people the opportunity to experience live music and here are a few words from our younger fans … ‘Music connects people.’ Radin, aged 11. ‘The music makes me feel open and happy.’ Zysha, aged 11. ‘It made me feel relaxed and free in a cloud of song.’ Nora, aged 11.

And here are a few words from our very special Patron, Dame Judi Dench: “I’m a real fan of Ensemble Reza, having attended several concerts over the last year. The passion and virtuosity of the musicians is evident in every note they play, and their shared sense of musicianship results in outstanding performances which leave audiences cheering for more! We hope you will be free to join us for this special concert in January, which has been made possible with the support raised by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and awarded by Postcode Society Trust. The Grand Competition Tent

It’s back! The Grand Competition Tent will be on the Common on Village Day this year. Along with the procession theme this year, our categories celebrate nature, pollinators and sustainability - with a bit of coronation thrown in as well; we couldn’t let this momentous event pass without a nod to our new monarch! Our judges are all local experts who are already excited to see your entries.

In each of the groups there are one or two categories that are just for the young generations, but all other categories are open to all ages. So, if you are a brilliant baker, a flourishing florist or a creative crafter of any age – join in the fun! All entries in the children’s categories will be judged in the following age groups: 5 and under, 6-10 years, 11-16 years. You may enter as many categories as you want for just £1 entry fee per person. Registration is now open and will close at 10pm Thursday 1st June. To enter, visit www.kingedwardhall.org.uk/village-day or pop into Ounce (refill store) on the High Street to complete a form and pay your £1 fee (exact money only please). All entries must be delivered to the Grand Competition Tent on the Common on Village Day (Sat 3rd June) between 9am-10am. The tent will be closed for judging between 10am and midday. It will reopen from midday so that visitors to Village Day can view all the entries, including those judged the best in each category. All entries must be collected between 4.30pm and 5.00pm at the end of the day.

Lindfield Village Day planned for June 3rd 2023

Lindfield Village Day returns to the Common on Saturday 3rd June this year, and is set to be bigger than ever. But have you ever wondered how it all comes together?

The day, a sister event with Lindfield Village Run, is organised by a team of volunteers led by co-chairs Katherine Alcock and David Tingley. “Whilst we have both been involved for many years, that’s not the case with a good number of the team,” David said. “When people take on new roles at Village Day, it’s always refreshing as they can bring new ideas and fresh perspectives.” For instance, this year the reinstatement of the much-loved High Street procession is being taken on by Julie Blackstock, Sam Crick has been booking acts to perform on the stage in the Food & Drink Quarter, and Michelle, Claire and Emma are bringing back the Competition Tent. Aside from the core team who meet regularly to make the event happen, there are a number of other specific roles which they are asking residents to help fill. Can you help, or do you know someone who could?

Social media guru (1 hour per week)
Someone who knows what they are doing with Facebook, to listen to what’s being planned by the team, and drip feed posts online about it.

Volunteer coordinator (1-2 hours per week)
Super-organised with a spreadsheet and well connected, this person will make sure we have the right people in the right places on Village Day itself.

Stallholder volunteer (a 1 or 2 hour shift on 3rd June)
Do a stint as crew on a King Edward Hall stall, smiling and helping to raise money for the village hall at the same time.

Car park marshal (a 1 or 2 hour shift on 3rd June)
Looks great in hi-vis, and can work as part of a team to safely and calmly get cars parked, coming in from Lewes Road. Walkie-talkie provided!

Procession marshal (11.30-13.30 on 3rdJune)
Available for this specific time on the day, to help manage the safe arrival of the people and vehicles in the procession, onto the Common.

If you are able to help with any of these roles, please get in touch via email to: villageday@kingedwardhall.org.uk. The safety of the public is paramount on the day, and having a large group of willing volunteers to share the load is essential to achieving that goal.
